So event’s season is underway and if your feeling the pressure as an exhibitor, we feel your pain, even if this year fate has forced our Christina to take time out, we, the team are looking forward to seeing EVERYONE of you at REC EXPO this March… we will be on the floor, with all the other amazing foot fallers – be sure to smile for us, as we will be supporting the event again this year with it’s socials by taking all the photos, but asides that, it got us thinking… Networking at big events, even if you’re not an exhibitor, can still be very rewarding if you approach it with a clear strategy. Here are some tips to make the most of such opportunities:

1. Prepare Ahead of Time

  • Research the Event: Know the event schedule, speakers, panel discussions, and any networking opportunities. Familiarise yourself with the event’s purpose, who is attending, and the key players you may want to meet.
  • Set Goals: Decide what you want to achieve. Whether it’s meeting potential clients, partners, or industry influencers, setting clear goals helps you focus your efforts.

2. Leverage Social Media

  • Engage Before the Event: Follow the event’s social media pages, connect with attendees or speakers, and participate in conversations. Mention that you’ll be attending the event to create recognition.
  • Use Event Hashtags: If the event has specific hashtags, use them to post updates, share thoughts, and engage with others who are attending.

3. Master Your Elevator Pitch

  • Craft a Short, Clear Pitch: You’ll likely meet many people quickly, so make sure you have a concise introduction ready. Tailor it based on the person you’re talking to, but always include who you are, what you do, and what you hope to achieve.

4. Utilize the Attendee List

  • If the event provides a list of attendees, make sure to scan through it ahead of time. Identify key people you want to meet, then seek out ways to approach them. Many people will be open to networking if you reach out via email or social media beforehand.

5. Attend Networking Sessions and Workshops

  • Participate in designated networking times, breakout sessions, and workshops. These environments often foster deeper conversations and can be less intimidating than random mingling.

6. Approach Exhibitors

  • While you may not be an exhibitor, exhibitors are often eager to make connections and network as well. Approach their booths, ask questions, and engage with them. It’s an opportunity to network with both the exhibitor and other attendees at the booth.

7. Engage in Conversations

  • Be Approachable: When networking, be open to starting conversations with people you don’t know. Often, it’s a simple question like, “What brought you to this event?” or “What are you hoping to get out of today?”
  • Listen More Than You Talk: People appreciate a good listener. Ask insightful questions, and show genuine interest in what others have to say.

8. Follow Up

  • Collect Business Cards or LinkedIn Connections. Exchange contact information and make a note of the conversation for later reference.
  • Send a Thank You Message: After the event, follow up with personalised messages. Remind them of what you talked about and see if there’s an opportunity for continued conversation or collaboration.

9. Be Visible

  • Even if you’re not an exhibitor, being visible can help. Attend high-profile sessions, participate in Q&As, and network during breaks. This increases your chances of meeting other attendees and making connections.

10. Be Respectful of Others’ Time

  • Lastly and very importantly, at events, people are often busy. If you engage in conversation, be mindful of others’ schedules. Be brief but meaningful; don’t linger too long unless the conversation is productive.

Networking at big events is all about being strategic, prepared, and approachable. You don’t have to be an exhibitor to form valuable connections. Keep an open mind, stay proactive, and follow up afterward to solidify the relationships.
