Social Snippet August 2023

Social media news august 2023

Welcome to the online version of the Social Snippet!

Each month you will find the latest news and updates in the world of Social Media and Online Marketing that have caught the GU Team's eye!

TIKTOK MAKES TEXT POSTS AVAILABLE!

This new feature provides another way for TikTok users to share a different form of content within the app. The display will be quite similar to Instagram Stories’ text-only updates.

TikTok’s text posts, which have been in testing with some users over the last few months, enable you to add a full-screen of text, to which you can then add music, stickers, etc.

You can edit the background colour to your liking, as well as the text fonts, and placement within the frame. Your text posts can be up to 1,000 characters long, giving you plenty of room to grab attention with your words in the app.

Do you find it difficult to find templates on Instagram?

Instagram is launching a new and improved template browser process, which will enable users to search Reels templates in different categories, organised by ‘Recommended’, ‘Trending’, and those that you’ve previously saved.

It’s a more centralised approach to using templates, which could make it easier to lean into key trends and formats, and help you come up with more effective video approaches.

That’s not all! Instagram’s also looking to improve the template editing process, with new elements that will better map the creation flow. This could be very useful for your content creation process.

Threads user numbers see a decline from its initial launch

Threads daily active user count has dropped by 70% since its launch, it’s been reported that the data.ai downloads have slowed significantly. It has been predicted that Meta’s real-time news app is destined for failure.

What do you think?

It’s been another crazy month for Twitter!

The name ‘Twitter’ has officially changed to the name ‘X’.

The colours have also been changed from blue to black and whilst we still can ‘tweet’ these will soon no longer be called a ‘tweet’, Musk says they’ll be called an ‘x’.

According to Twitter owner Elon Musk, he’s officially changed the name as part of his broader vision for an ‘everything app’, which will eventually bring a much wider range of functions, and ideally make ‘X’ a key interactive component in billions of users’ lives.

WhatsApp launches Instant Video Message!

Who doesn’t love a good old voice note – we sure do at GU! WhatsApp have now built on that feature and has launched brand new video messages. Video messages are a real-time way to respond to chats with whatever you want to say and show in 60 seconds.

WhatsApp said: “Sending a video message is as simple as sending a voice message. Just tap to switch to video mode, and hold to record the video. You can also swipe up to lock and record the video hands-free. Videos will play automatically on mute when opened in a chat, and tapping on the video will start the sound. Video messages are protected with end-to-end encryption to keep your messages secure.”

Elon Musk's obsession with "X"

As Nicole has said above, it's been a crazy month again for Twitter...er "X"! I knew that Elon Musk was involved with PayPal back in the day but what I didn't know was that he is a bit "X" obsessed and has form with this...

Back in 1999, Musk tried to re-brand PayPal (another very well known tech brand) into "X" way back at this time. To cut a longish story short, we know know that didn't actually happen else we would be "X-ing" money to each other now...

OpenAI Files Trademark Application For GPT-5

It seems there's no change in the pace of updates coming in the realm of AI at the moment. Meta is testing more AI related features while it's been noticed that a Trademark application has been made for GPT-5.

While this doesn't necessarily mean that we are looking at a big leap in the technology, it does show that there is no let up in research and advancements across the board in the field. Though when you see the words "software for developing and implementing artificial neural networks", those of us of a certain age can only think Terminator! ;-)
