Why You Should Be All Over #FOMO

A few weeks ago JOMO! Now FOMO!!! What is happening??? Well as much as taking a break and skipping out, we can’t forget that some people, just can’t miss out – and, I am one of them! Christina spoke once at an event about how business owners should be all over #FOMO. The event was specifically focused on Recruitment Agencies – but in hindsight, the subject matter is highly relevant to any business who has something to sell, or vacancies to fill!

There is a phenomenon called FOMO. Have you heard about it?

It’s in the dictionary as follows…

“FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out: anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website.”

Christina’s personal view is that, as business leaders, we should be embracing FOMO. Be warned – this article is purely based on opinion, so don’t expect a series of stats to back up my claims this time!

FOMO can be a good thing for our brands. Imagine you have a captive audience that is desperate to keep up with the latest happenings in your business, whether it’s the next product release or having that fly-on-the-wall insight that means they know what you’ve been up to. This audience would always see your social media posts, engage with you and tell their friends about you. They would become brand advocates and be one of your best referral sources.

Creating FOMO Through Social Media

In reality, this level of engagement should be your goal when managing your social media presence. To build FOMO effectively:

  • Share exclusive content – Give your audience a behind-the-scenes look at your business, product development, or team culture.
  • Highlight limited-time offers – Creating urgency with exclusive deals, flash sales, or early-bird specials can drive immediate action.
  • Leverage testimonials and user-generated content – Showcasing real customer experiences makes others want to join in.
  • Engage with your audience – Respond to comments, ask questions, and create interactive content that keeps people coming back.
  • Create a sense of community – When people feel like they belong to a group or movement, their FOMO increases because they don’t want to be left out.

The Emotional Connection to Brands

Think about your own purchasing decisions. Why do you choose one brand over another? While price and convenience often play a role, in many cases, our decisions are influenced by the connection we feel toward a brand. When we admire a brand’s values, story, or personality, we develop loyalty and stick with it, even when alternatives exist.

FOMO plays a significant role in this decision-making process. If a brand positions itself as the place to be, or as offering something truly special, people will naturally want to be part of it.

Final Thoughts

FOMO isn’t just a social media buzzword, it’s a powerful tool for businesses. By fostering an engaged audience that feels emotionally connected to your brand, you can turn casual followers into dedicated customers and brand advocates.

So, rather than fearing FOMO, use it to your advantage. Keep your audience excited, engaged, and always craving more. The more they feel like they can’t afford to miss out, the more successful your brand will be.
