Help I'm new to TikTok

Dear Nicole,

I’ve recently started a TikTok account to get more marketing coverage for my stationery business but I wouldn’t call myself a professional on this app and have no idea where to start. I’m also on Instagram and have made some Reels to promote my page but I was wondering if you have any tips on how I can get the most out of TikTok to try and gain attraction towards my page on this platform.

Lucy, Brighton

Dear Lucy,

Firstly, welcome to the world of TikTok…it’s an adventure but it gives you an amazing opportunity to be creative. Also, the fact you have made Reels for Instagram is a step in the right direction, as Reels and TikTok videos are similar in terms of how you put them together. Below I have put together 5 top tips on how you can get seen on TikTok. What are we waiting for? Let’s jump straight in!

Start with a hook - TikTok moves fast. If you don’t grab a viewer’s attention, you risk losing them to whoever is next on the endless scroll. When creating a video on TikTok, start with a hook, ideally in the first second or two of the video; you can do this through audio or visual means. This is also a great way to promote you and your business as you are showing your face and your product. For example, say you are promoting a new planner, drop some text onto your video along the lines of “The 5 Tops Tips Why You Need This Planner In Your Life.”

Make TikToks from your comments - Listen to your viewers! If you receive a comment on one of your videos asking for you to make a certain type of video - DO IT! Also, tag the comment onto TikTok so they, as a viewer, feel recognised. This means you are listening to the audience and also encouraging more people to comment, which will result in you gaining attraction.

Use trending sounds - The best way to get inspiration for new content is to scroll through the platform yourself. See what sounds are trending and who is using them, and what for, and think about how you can put your own twist on them.

Jump on trends - Not all trends are based on audio — there are game-based trends or voiceover trends, which are a great way to incorporate some lighthearted fun into your content. To find these trends, simply have a scroll through and see what people are using, or you can visit the search bar, which will share all the latest trends people are using.

Use popular hashtags - Make yourself easier to find on TikTok by using trending hashtags that relate to your content. This helps the platform understand what kinds of videos you are making and what kinds of users to show those videos to.

I hope you find these tips useful, Lucy! I think my overall tip for anyone using TikTok is try not take yourself too seriously, make sure to have fun and let the creative waves flow and try to post regularly. I look forward to seeing your TikToks - good luck!

Nicole
