June has been a crazy-busy month! I’ve been out and about and certainly have some miles under my belt – but when Cameron from Firefish Software asked me if I would join him on the Firefish Crowdcast I could not miss the opportunity! The subject of the episode was around the mistakes I see Recruiters make through their digital marketing. However, in essence, many of these mistakes are also repeated by non-recruiters too. On reflection, the conversation is relevant to anyone using social media to perform business development activities, and so we thought it was worthy of the Green Umbrella blog!

So, have a listen – and tell me what you think!

The key discussion points covered are…

  • What are the biggest mistakes being made on LinkedIn, and how can they be overcome?
  • How to re-engage your LinkedIn connections
  • Is paid advertising worthwhile on LinkedIn?
  • Growing LinkedIn Company page likes
  • Facebook Advertising approaches and retargeting on Facebook
  • LinkedIn groups vs Facebook groups
  • What should you be expecting Twitter to deliver as part of your social media marketing strategy
  • Instagram objectives – and how to test if this might be the platform for you

The Crowdcast finishes off with me answering the following question…

“To anyone who is on social media but doesn’t have a strategy what advice would you give?”

My Answer…

The first thing to consider your objectives? Choose three main objectives you want to achieve and stick to them. Have a clear idea of what you want your social media profiles to look like, and what kind of content you want to put out there – Have a brainstorm around that. Put yourself in the shoes of your audience and think about what they will be looking to engage with when they log onto Facebook or LinkedIn. It’s probably nothing to do with what you’re selling – So think about what they want to see and what is going to give them value.

Then think about ROI, and how you will measure success. But keep in mind that the thing with social media is, it’s a bit like buying a house! (I always use this metaphor.) When you find a house you want to buy – you fall in love. You’ll hear people say how amazing the doors or windows, kitchen or garden is, but you NEVER hear anyone saying ‘Wow! I’ve found this amazing house… it’s to die for – I’m so excited… you should see the cement!’ The cement is holding that house together – And the reality is all the bits you put in your marketing, your social media should be holding that together too.
